Project: Symbol
Students trace images and lettterforms from magazines, and combine them into abstract symbolic images. We critique the work by looking primarily at form, reflecting on how symbolic meaning emerges from association.

Project: Icon study
Students draw images of objects in an iconc (reduced) visual language, striving for recognizability. The exploration continues as they draw the same object two more times, each time reducing the image further to the essentials. We are curious to see how much information is needed in order to still convey that object. Next, students combine one of their icon studies with a letterform.

Project: Letterform studies
Students trace the form and counterform of a selection of letterforms, numbers and punctuation marks out of a typeface specimen book. Focusing on examples from each of the main type categories, they combine the form and counterform into single lettermarks.

Project: Logosymbol and Logotype
Building on the previous projects, and on lectures/exposure to the ideas of semiotics and gestalt theory, students develop two different ideas: one logosymbol and one logotype.

Project: Poster design
Students generated a list of issues for which they care deeply. They each designed a poster to promote this issue or some cause related to it. The posters were created by hand and realized to scale: 17.5 x 20 in.
